Using TI’s new 10BASE-T1L PHY, designers can transmit industry-leading 10 Mbps signals up to 1.7 km

Beijing, October 22, 2020 - Texas Instruments (TI) recently announced the launch of a new Ethernet physical layer (PHY) that transmits 10 Mbps Ethernet signals up to 1.7 km over a single-pair twisted pair. The cable distance of DP83TD510E has been expanded, and it is 1.5km longer than the 200-meter requirement of the IEEE 802.3cg 10BASE-T1L single-pair Ethernet specification. The extra cable length can help designers expand the range of industrial communications without increasing system weight or wiring costs. For more information, please visitwww.ti.com/DP83TD510E-pr.

Meet the higher bandwidth requirements of long-distance communication

As the complexity of factory and building automation systems continues to grow, so does the need to transmit more data between network edges and nodes. The ability to directly access edge node applications can improve control and status monitoring, while also simplifying data sharing between networked systems.

Currently, solutions for connecting connectivity to edge nodes generally use a decentralized system of multiple fieldbus protocols supported by a network gateway through protocol conversion. Unifying the network through protocol conversion increases complexity and cost, while also limiting the ability to remotely monitor edge node applications.

DP83TD510E helps designers realize a single communication network from the controller to the edge node, which can transmit full-duplex data through a single-pair twisted pair. By eliminating the need for additional protocols, gateways, and cables for higher-bandwidth communications, designers can simplify network management while improving control of HVAC valves and actuators, field transmitters, elevator master control, and fire alarm control. When upgrading from two-wire fieldbus technology (such as 4 to 20 mA current loop) to single-pair Ethernet, designers can reuse the existing two-wire fieldbus infrastructure for data and power transmission, Further simplify network design and reduce installation costs.

Realize Ethernet connectivity in intrinsically safe systems

DP83TD510E is designed for Intrinsically Safe Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer (APL) system. Ethernet APL is an Ethernet specification based on the IEEE 802.3.cg 10BASE-T1L standard. Its development purpose is to simplify the implementation of Ethernet networks in process automation systems with intrinsic safety requirements.

The key design considerations for intrinsically safe Ethernet-APL systems, especially those designed for use in explosive hazardous environments, are the ability to reduce the power level and temperature of the Ethernet PHY in the event of a system failure. By supporting external terminal resistors, when used in remote process automation applications such as field transmitters, DP83TD510E can reduce inrush current and maintain a low operating temperature.

In addition to helping designers more easily meet their intrinsic safety requirements, DP83TD510E produces ultra-low power consumption of less than 45mW at 1V, and provides point-to-point additional power margin that can be redistributed to other critical circuits to improve system performance.
