Edge intelligence effectively simplifies equipment reconfiguration and sensor debugging process

Beijing, China—October 28, 2020—Modern smart chemical factories need to adjust the electrical characteristics of sensors remotely and quickly to minimize downtime and increase productivity. Maxim IntegratedMAXREFDES177# IO-Link®The reference design is used to demonstrate the flexibility of the MAX22515 IO-Link transceiver, which can be seamlessly configured through softwareMAX22000All modes of analog IO. The chip has extremely high flexibility, quickly realizes system configuration and reduces factory downtime.

Maxim Integrated's MAX22000 and MAX22515 chipset solutions take full advantage of IO-Link's bidirectional universal interface. The IO-Link interface allows each IO-Link sensor, actuator or IO expansion module to interact with the standard hardware interface. The chipset solution also provides software-defined performance parameters and optional analog input or output operating modes. MAXREFDES177# IO-Link reference design integrates these functions and is used to demonstrate flexible software configuration capabilities.

IO-Link and software configurable IO products:

  • MAX22000: Software configurable analog IO, its power consumption and size are half of the closest competitive product, and its temperature drift is 2 times lower than the closest competitive solution, thus supporting high-precision temperature calibration. Key features include 24-bit ADC analog input mode and 18-bit DAC analog output mode, and work in 2-wire or 4-wire resistance temperature detector (RTD)/thermocouple temperature measurement.
  • MAX22515: IO-link transceivers consume only one-fourth of the power consumption and only one-half of the size compared with the closest competitors. MAX22515 is the industry's smallest single-channel IO-Link transceiver with ±1.2kV/500Ω surge protection. This highly integrated device includes protection diodes, auxiliary digital inputs, I2C or pin control, built-in oscillators and optional 3.3V or 5V LDOs, helping to provide high configurability and reduce SKUs. The on-resistance of the C/Q driver stage of the device is only 2.2Ω or 2.65Ω (typical value), and the minimum 2.5mm x 2.0mm WLP package is adopted, which reduces heat loss by 4 times. Compared with the closest competitor product, the solution size is reduced by 50%, and it is suitable for IO-Link sensors or actuators with small size and limited space.

Key advantage

  • flexibility: The software can define IO and adjust equipment parameters in real time, which helps to greatly optimize machine performance and reduce plant downtime.
  • Efficient: MAX22000 and MAX22515 are optimized to achieve the best energy-saving standards in the industry, and the power consumption is one-half and one-fourth of competing solutions, respectively.
  • Small size: MAX22515 provides the smallest single-channel IO-Link footprint, less than 5mm²; MAX22000 footprint is 86mm². Both products are 50% smaller than other solutions on the market.
